Meet Taylor, SMBC from Texas
Name: Taylor
Age: 44
Location: Houston, Texas
Profession: Flight Attendant
Why did you decide to pursue solo motherhood? I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a mother. I spent my 20s and 30s traveling the world and once I hit 40, I knew I needed to pursue this dream even if it was on my own. You can meet a great person and get married at any time in your life. But I didn’t want to miss my chance to be a mom.
When did you start your journey to become a solo mama? How old were you? I started just after turning 41. The summer of 2019.
Did you pursue IVF/IUI/Other: My doctor advised that , due to my age, I would have the best odds with IVF. So that is what I did.
How long did it take you to conceive? What were your biggest obstacles in the fertility process (if any)? It took me 1.5 years. 3 egg retrievals, 2 embryo transfers, 1 miscarriage, and one miracle baby girl. She was worth it all. The biggest obstacle in the process is probably the emotional toll that it takes.
What is your biggest piece of advice for other women considering this path? Don’t hesitate! If this is what you want, just GO FOR IT. It’s been the greatest decision of my life.
Any other tips, tricks, advice, lessons learned or comments you wish to share? For the IVF and trying to conceive process, it helps to find community. There’s thousands of other women going through what you are! I found a lot of encouragement through the community. (Groups on social media , etc ). I even met a couple amazing friends through my fertility clinic!
For solo motherhood and parenting , if you’re at all interested in connecting with your child’s half siblings, definitely go for that too! I’ve met 2 of my daughters half siblings and their mothers and it’s been so great to have our children know each other and grow up knowing some of their siblings. The mamas are pretty fantastic too!
